What is De-Shedding Treatment Grooming?

A de-shedding treatment is a bath with a releasing shampoo, a long high-velocity blow-dry and a methodical undercoat rake — it removes dead undercoat without cutting the protective topcoat. It is the correct service for a double-coated dog that is covering your house in hair, and 407 of the 4,783 style-tagged photos in our library show one.

Choosing the right groomer for de-shedding treatment is important for getting the best results. Look for groomers with experience in this service and positive reviews from pet owners. Groomably lists 865 groomers across 659 Australian cities offering de-shedding treatment.

What de-shedding treatment includes

  • Bath with a de-shedding or releasing shampoo and conditioner
  • Long, thorough high-velocity dry that physically blows dead undercoat out
  • Undercoat rake and slicker work through the coat, section by section
  • Focus on the heavy-shed zones: neck ruff, trousers, tail base, flanks
  • Nails and ears as part of the standard appointment
How long it takes
Usually 90 minutes to two and a half hours. A husky or samoyed mid-coat-blow is at the long end and some salons charge accordingly.
What it costs
Commonly charged as an add-on of $20–40 on top of a bath and dry, or bundled into a large-breed groom. The variable is drying time, which is why big coats cost more.

What it does that brushing at home does not

A double coat has two layers: a dense insulating undercoat and a longer, water-repellent topcoat of guard hairs. Shedding is the undercoat cycling out. A slicker brush at home lifts some of it, but a high-velocity dryer pushes air right down to the skin and moves dead coat out of the whole depth of the coat in a way hand-brushing cannot match.

The part that matters is what is left behind. A de-shed removes the layer causing the mess while leaving the guard hairs intact, which is exactly the opposite of what a clipper does. That is why groomers recommend it instead of a summer shave for double-coated breeds.

Which dogs it is for

The breeds that appear most often in our de-shedding photos are the ones you would expect: husky (50 photos), border collie (27), samoyed (25), golden retriever (14), german shepherd (14). Labradors, cats and any thick-coated crossbreed belong on the same list.

It is not a service for single-coated dogs. A poodle, a maltese or a cavoodle has no undercoat to remove — for those coats the equivalent job is a thorough brush-out and a haircut, and paying a de-shedding surcharge is money wasted.

When to book it

Most double-coated dogs blow coat heavily twice a year, typically as the weather turns in spring and again in autumn. Booking a de-shed at the front of each of those windows does more for the hair in your house than anything else on a price list, because it gets the loose coat out on a grooming table instead of on your couch over six weeks.

Outside those windows, every eight to twelve weeks alongside a normal bath is plenty for most dogs.

De-Shedding Treatment Grooming FAQ

What is de-shedding treatment grooming?

De-shedding treatments use specialised tools and techniques to remove loose undercoat, reducing shedding by up to 80%. Ideal for double-coated breeds.

How much does de-shedding treatment grooming cost in Australia?

De-Shedding Treatment Grooming pricing depends on the breed, coat condition, and the groomer's experience. Contact groomers directly through Groomably for personalised quotes — most offer free consultations to assess your pet's needs.

How do I find a good de-shedding treatment grooming groomer?

Look for groomers with experience in de-shedding treatment services and positive reviews from pet owners. Groomably lists 865 groomers across 659 cities — compare services, read reviews, and find the right groomer for your pet.

How often should my pet get de-shedding treatment grooming?

Most pets benefit from de-shedding treatment every 4-8 weeks, depending on breed and coat type. Your groomer can recommend the ideal schedule based on your pet's specific needs.

Is de-shedding the same as shaving a double-coated dog?

No, and the difference is the whole point. De-shedding removes dead undercoat and leaves the guard hairs that protect against sun, heat and water. Shaving removes both, and on many double-coated dogs the guard hairs regrow slowly, patchily, or not at all.

Will de-shedding stop my dog shedding completely?

No. It removes the coat that was going to come out anyway, so shedding around the house drops noticeably for several weeks after a treatment. It is management, not a cure — double-coated dogs shed because that is how the coat works.
