About The Pet Pad

The Pet Pad is a family-owned dog grooming salon, daycare and pet store on Doggett Street in Newstead, just along from New Farm and Fortitude Valley. It opened in 2004 as a boutique pet store on Brunswick Street and grew into grooming and daycare as demand built, settling into its current Newstead home in 2019. Grooming sits at the heart of what it does, run by a team experienced in breed-specific work.

The salon covers the full range of coat care: full grooms that take in body styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, a hydrobath and a blow-dry and brush-out, plus standalone hydrobaths, deshedding for double-coated dogs, and breed-specific trims shaped to suit Cavaliers, Spoodles, Mini Schnauzers, Westies, Bichons and Cocker Spaniels. Owners are consulted at drop-off so the cut matches what they have in mind, photos welcome, and a range of shampoos including medicated, oatmeal and sensitive-skin formulas means coats and skin that need a gentler approach are catered for. Puppies are taken once they have had their final vaccination.

The ethos here is simple: pets are treated as family, and the day is built to be comfortable and stress-free whether a dog is in for a groom, a play or a treat from the shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my dog be groomed?

It depends on breed, coat type and lifestyle. As a guide, short-haired breeds suit a bath, deshed and nail trim every 4-6 weeks; poodle-type and long-haired coats every 4-6 weeks to prevent matting; double-coated breeds every 6-8 weeks; and breed-specific styles every 6-8 weeks to keep their shape.

What's included in a full groom?

A full groom covers full-body styling (body, legs, head, face, ears, tail and feet), a nail trim, ear cleaning, a hydrobath with premium shampoo, and a blow-dry and brush-out. Add-ons such as anal gland expression, specialty shampoos and teeth brushing are available.

Do you offer breed-specific trims?

Yes. The Pet Pad specialises in breed-specific trims for Schnauzers, Westies, Bichons, Cavaliers, Cocker Spaniels and more, and can also tailor a dog's groom to a preferred traditional or modern style.

Can I request a specific haircut for my dog?

Yes. Groomers consult with owners at drop-off to understand their preferences, photos are always welcome, and every detail from body length to tail trim is gone over to get the look right.

Do you use sensitive-skin or medicated products?

Yes. A range of shampoos and conditioners is available for different skin and coat types, including Malaseb (medicated), gentle protein for sensitive skin, Aloveen (oatmeal-based), a deshedding formula, whitening shampoo and flea treatment shampoo.

Do you groom puppies, and when should they start?

Yes. Puppies can start grooming after their final vaccination with vet clearance. Early introduction helps them adjust and makes future grooms more comfortable.

How long does a grooming appointment take?

Most appointments take 2-4 hours depending on breed, coat condition and temperament. The salon will call or text when a dog is ready for pickup.
