About Uncanny Animals

Uncanny Animals is a boutique grooming studio in Yarraville, in Melbourne's Inner West, where dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs are all looked after by a self-described gang of animal lovers. The studio grooms with a stated ethos of "Humanity Over Vanity" and holistic care, leaning on the idea that compassion should sit ahead of appearance while still treating grooming as a craft with real history and a modern, playful twist.

The approach suits pets who need a calmer, more considered experience. Anxious and reactive animals are flagged at booking and scheduled to avoid crowding, full grooms run by appointment so each pet gets unhurried attention, and the team draws on feline-specific training for cats, who are given a minimum three-hour window. Senior pets are handled with simplified, lower-stress grooms that skip high-velocity drying, and the studio is upfront that it does not sedate animals on site. Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free options are available for sensitive skin. The studio also identifies as vegan, cruelty-free, Fear-Free Certified, Australian owned and a certified Sustainable Salon.

It reads as a thoughtful, values-led salon for owners who want grooming done gently and ethically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment or can I walk in?

Full grooming is by appointment only. Smaller services like face trims and nail clipping may be able to accommodate walk-ins, but calling ahead first is recommended.

Can you groom my puppy or kitten?

Yes. Puppies and kittens are welcome once they have completed their vaccinations. A first kitten groom gently introduces them to the grooming experience.

Do you groom anxious or reactive pets?

Yes. Anxious pets should be flagged when booking so the appointment can be scheduled to avoid other animals. Reactive dogs may be groomed with a muzzle and an additional handling fee, and behavioural grooming appointments are available. The team does not sedate animals on site and follows a Humanity Over Vanity approach.

Can you groom senior pets?

Existing senior clients continue to be cared for, with the focus shifting to health, comfort and safety through simplified, low-stress grooming and gentle drying methods. New clients are not accepted for dogs aged 14 and over, cats 15 and over, rabbits 6 and over, or guinea pigs 5 and over, and a handling fee applies for dogs 13+ and cats 14+.

Do you groom cats, and how long does it take?

Yes. The team has extensive feline-specific training to handle scratching, biting and resistance, and cat grooming requires a minimum of three hours of scheduling.

My pet has allergies or sensitive skin - can it still be groomed?

Yes. Hypoallergenic products are available for a small additional charge, and owners may bring their own products. Fragrance-free, low-tox options can be arranged with advance notice, though pets with pre-existing skin conditions may still experience irritation.

What is your cancellation policy?

Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours notice incur a fee equal to 50% of the scheduled grooming service. After two missed appointments, future bookings require full pre-payment.

Do you offer teeth cleaning or anal gland expression?

No. The studio recommends dental care be managed through at-home maintenance and routine veterinary assessments, and that anal glands, when medically necessary, be expressed internally by a qualified veterinary professional.
